Abstract

This study develops an integrated climate action framework combining nature-based solutions (NbS) and community-led innovation to tackle climate mitigation and environmental sustainability with scalable, context-sensitive interventions. Using mixed methods including case studies, participatory workshops and geospatial analysis, this research evaluates NbS and grassroots initiatives across urban and rural Southeast Asian settings. Results indicate that community-supported NbS (urban wetlands, reforestation, green roofs) effectively mitigate urban heat islands and improve carbon sequestration. Grassroots innovations in waste governance, distributed renewable energy and agroecology also cut greenhouse gas emissions and boost socioecological resilience, especially under enabling local policies. Co-design among researchers, municipal authorities and residents strengthens adaptive capacity and sustained environmental stewardship. Such integration of ecological planning and social innovation mitigates climate vulnerability while advancing green jobs, environmental education and inclusive governance. This study confirms that synergizing top-down policy backing and bottom-up grassroots innovation drives systemic climate transformation. It proposes embedding NbS into official climate agendas, financing local innovation systems and constructing transdisciplinary cooperation platforms, delivering a practical framework for global actors pursuing climate resilience and sustainable development.
