Although we are interested both in the functional organization and in the mode of operation of the mammalian genome, we will confine ourselves here to its functional organization. Our approach to this study has taken three directions: analysis of the primary transcription products; characterization of the sequence organization of the nuclear DNA; and study of the isolated, template-active portion of the homologous interphase chromatin. All of our studies have been done with rat tissues.
