DLDan LiPLPujuan LiuHZHuijun Zhang

Key Result

Phased written health education combined with a healthy diet significantly improved the quality of life total score at the recovery stage (122.65 vs 99.80, p<0.001) compared to routine health education in patients after heart valve replacement.

Structured PICO

Does phased written health education combined with healthy diet improve medication compliance, anticoagulant knowledge, health behavior, and quality of life in patients after heart valve replacement?

P
Population
130 patients who underwent heart valve replacement surgery, followed for up to 6 months postoperatively.
I
Intervention
Phased written health education combined with healthy diet, divided into 3 phases (first-stage rehabilitation, second-stage rehabilitation, and recovery stage up to 6 months postoperatively). Included a health education and healthy diet manual, WeChat group communication, WeChat public account updates, weekly 45-minute health education sessions (24 total), and specific dietary guidance (low-salt, low-fat, high-fiber, avoiding vitamin K-rich foods).
C
Comparator
Routine health education, including instructions to take medication on time, recheck international normalized ratio (INR), identify early clinical signs of bleeding or thrombosis, contraception advice for women of childbearing age, and trauma prevention.
O
Outcome
Medication compliance (Modified Morisky Scale), degree of anticoagulant drugs knowledge, health behavior ability (Healthy Behavior Ability Scale), and quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) assessed at first stage, second stage, and recovery stage (up to 6 months postoperatively).patient reported

Phased written health education combined with dietary guidance significantly improves medication compliance, anticoagulant knowledge, and quality of life in patients recovering from heart valve replacement.

Main Result

Absolute Event Rate: 122.65% vs 99.8%

Limitations

  • A larger sample size and longer follow-up time are needed to further clarify the assessment of safety and long-term outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: To observe the effect of phased written health education combined with healthy diet on the quality of life of patients after heart valve replacement. METHODS: One hundred-thirty patients who underwent heart valve replacement surgery in our hospital from January 2018 to January 2020 were enrolled as the research subjects. They were randomly divided into study group (65 patients, phased written health education combined with health Diet) and control group (65 cases, routine health education). The drug compliance and the degree of anticoagulant drugs knowledge were compared between the two groups in the first and second stage rehabilitation and the recovery stage. The health behavior ability and quality of life at different phases were also observed. RESULTS: During the first and the second stage rehabilitation, and the recovery stage, the drug compliance of the study group was superior to that of the control group, with statistical significance (P 0.05). The healthy behavior ability of study group for each stage was superior to the control group, the difference was significant (P < 0.05). The healthy behavior ability and quality of life showed the same results with statistical significance (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The use of phased written health education combined with healthy diet in patients after heart valve replacement can effectively improve patients' medication compliance, anticoagulant drugs knowledge, healthy behavior ability and quality of life at different stages, and is worthy of clinical application.

Li et al. (2021) conducted an RCT in Heart valve replacement (n=130). Phased written health education combined with healthy diet vs. Routine health education was evaluated on Quality of life total score at recovery stage (2 to 6 months postoperatively) (p=<0.001). Phased written health education combined with a healthy diet significantly improved the quality of life total score at the recovery stage (122.65 vs 99.80, p<0.001) compared to routine health education in patients after heart valve replacement.
