The role of training in teacher’s evaluation. A survey of second grade teachers in at the regional unit of Achaia

The purpose of this paper has to do with the investigation of the views of second grade teachers of prefecture of Achaia in Greece regarding the relation among training and teacher"s evaluation. The research was carried out with the tool of questionnaire while the analysis of the data collected was made with the statistical package SPSS. The results showed that there is a neutral to negative attitude of teachers towards the evaluation process, while the gender factor did not appear to have a significant effect on teachers" attitudes towards evaluation. Teachers aged between 26 and 35 have a clearly more positive attitude than different age-group teachers, while graduate university teachers (in Greek: AEI) have a much lower positive attitude than others. Teachers holding a permanent position showed significantly less positive attitude than substitute or hourly paid colleagues. Concerning the obstacles that may exist for school self-evaluation, it emerged that the lack of in-school training is considered by teachers as the most important obstacle, only followed by the reduction of financial resources. Concerning the obstacles encountered in attending training programs on the part of teachers, the most important obstacle was that of lack of support on behalf of the state, while the second one was the lack of leisure time. Most teachers have shown the development of skills together with the enhancement of their knowledge to be the most important reason for attending trainings, while the reason for the upcoming evaluation does not seem to be important.
