Max Harry Weil, MD, PhD, was a cardiologist and pioneer in critical care medicine who died on July 29, 2011. He spent 23 years on faculty at the University of Southern California, where he opened one of the first intensive care units in the nation and started the Institute of Critical Care Medicine in 1959. He was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, and later chaired the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School, heading its cardiology and critical care divisions.
