He previously served in the cardiothoracic surgery department at the University of Iowa starting in 1971 and completed general surgery residency at the University of Southern California and cardiothoracic training at the University of Alabama. He authored the book Cardiac Surgery: Operative Technique and retired from clinical practice in 2004.
