The article examines the issues related to the changing attitudes towards the piano music of the great Russian composer over the centuries and the connection of his legacy with the traditions of Russian musical culture. Statements of outstanding musicians on the high purpose of M. I. Glinka’s music are given. The reasons why the works of Glinka and his contemporaries are rarely heard on the concert stage and in the educationaal process are analysed. Conclusions are drawn on the relationship between the shift of emphasis in the repertoire policy of concert-goers and students with the peculiarities of the modern socio-cultural situation, with the change of aesthetic preferences and requests of the audience. The contribution to the popularisation of Glinka’s piano music by such pianists of the past and present as E. Beckman- Shcherbina, Y. Bryushkov, L. Oborin, D. Blagoy, V. Kamyshov, V. Ryabchikov and others is considered. The article reveals the place of Glinka’s compositions in the repertoire of modern young pianists and emphasises the importance of the composer’s piano music for the further prosperity of the Russian piano school.
