Abstract The trend of the transition from the world energy consumption structure to clean energy is becoming increasingly clear, and hydrogen, as a clean energy that basically does not produce pollution when burning, should be paid attention to. With the discovery of natural hydrogen all over the world, natural hydrogen is likely to become an important source of hydrogen in the future energy pattern. This paper analyzes the main sources, reservoir theory, generation mechanism and distribution range of natural hydrogen. Combined with geological activities such as plate movement, fault activity and petrochemical reaction, it is considered that mantle-derived degassing and serpentine are the main reasons for natural hydrogen production. On this basis, based on the beneficial discovery that the formation and accumulation period of natural hydrogen is obviously shorter than that of oil and gas, the extensive distribution of natural hydrogen and the richness of total resources are discussed reasonably, the potential and feasibility of finding natural hydrogen in China are also discussed, aiming at providing some reference for the exploration and development of natural hydrogen in China and other countries in the world in the future. The conclusion is that although the exploration and development of natural hydrogen is still in the early stage, there is still a lot of room for development of related technologies and theories, but its theoretical storage capacity is at least worth trillions of dollars, and it is very worthwhile to invest a lot of manpower, material resources and resources in research.
