Abstract

Motivation: Standard SWI results in isointense or hypointense appearance of brain lesions preventing adequate detection of the central vein sign (CVS). Goal(s): This study aims to evaluate an optimized SWI protocol for improved detection of CVS at 3T. Approach: An optimized SWI protocol was developed by reducing the flip angle (from 15° to 5°) to provide adequate image contrast for CVS detection and compared against standard SWI. Results: CVS detection was increased by 23% when using optimized SWI as compared to standard. Diagnostic classification was also improved using optimized SWI (7/10 MS-patients classified as CVS-positive) versus standard SWI (3/10 MS-patients classified as CVS-positive). Impact: Optimized SWI protocol increases CVS detection and improves diagnostic classification for MS as compared to standard SWI.
