The research aims to reveal the conceptual and artistic connotations that the Chinese writer Xiao Jun invested in the concept of homeland based on the material of the novel “Village in August”. The scientific originality of the research lies in its focus on the work of Xiao Jun, a writer from Northeast China who is understudied in Russian scholarship; in determining the specificity of the artistic embodiment of the image of the homeland in the novel “Village in August”; in explicating the conceptual and artistic connotations of the image of the homeland, which are significant for the creative consciousness of the Chinese leftist writer, based on the material of his main work, the novel “Village in August”; and in establishing the key connotations of the image of the homeland in the formation of the writer’s patriotic ideology. The research findings showed that the image of the homeland in Xiao Jun’s work is not one-dimensional; the writer’s creative position is conveyed by many characters in the work, reflecting different configurations of this image. The image of the homeland in the novel is associated with the land, permeated with the history and life of generations of ancestors, is associated with the ideal of a peaceful and tranquil dwelling, a spiritual refuge that transcends geographical boundaries, and is also the main object of national pride and a stimulus for resisting foreign aggression.
