The study aims to identify the characteristics of the love lyrics of A. Fet and Dai Wangshu in a comparative aspect, using the poems “Whispers, timid breathing…” and “Rainy Alley” as examples, from the perspective of a Chinese reader. The article examines the imagery used by the poets to embody the emotional experiences of the persona, as well as the metric organization of the Russian and Chinese poems. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that it is the first one to present the common and different features of the representation of love themes based on the poems “Whispers, timid breathing…” by A. Fet and “Rainy Alley” by Dai Wangshu. The study concludes that a common feature of poetic imagery in the description of the feeling of love in the analyzed works is the implicit expression of the idea. It is shown that in Fet’s and Dai Wangshu’s poems, the idea is in the subtext: in the Russian classic, love relationships are not explicitly named, but they are implied, while in Dai Wangshu’s work, the love theme is explicitly expressed, but the subtext contains a socially-oriented idea. At the same time, the social context of the Chinese work distinguishes it from the poem by Fet, a proponent of the theory of “pure art”. The musicality of the metric organization of the text can also be presented as a common feature of the poems of Fet and Dai Wangshu, but the uniqueness of its embodiment distinguishes the works of the Russian and Chinese classics.
