Abstract Though surveys of cutover areas cannot take the place of systematic research as a guide to silviculture, they may furnish helpful clues to needed measures. The following comparisons of stand and reproductive conditions at different periods following a number of timber sales on Southern Appalachian national forests reveal both good and bad tendencies. A means for appraising the qualities of cutover areas is suggested.
