Abstract About 30 percent of the total forest area and about 40 percent of all privately owned forest land is in farm woodlands. In general farm woodlands are overcut and overgrazed. Mr. Preston has attempted to analyze the various factors contributing to the present condition of farm woodlands. He proposes the establishment of a thousand or more cooperative demonstration farm woodlands from which yield and financial data would be collected for twenty-five years or more. If the returns from farm woodlands are what foresters at least hope they are these demonstration woodlands wouldgo far in making a realistic approach to the problem possible.
