Abstract The state forester herein discusses forest ownership in California and state policy with respect thereto. He stresses particularly the economic handicaps involved in ownership of small properties and the public aids such owners require if their lands are to be profitably and well managed. Even so he holds little hope for good management at the hands of small timber owners. He recognizes that lands not profitable in private ownership will of necessity ultimately drift into public ownership.
