Introduction. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of children and adolescents experiencing mental health issues; however, the care system often fails to meet their needs adequately. The research indicates several key issues, namely the inadequate coordination of services, the constrained access to specialised care, and the absence of understanding among the child's immediate environment. The present article focuses on identifying the key needs of children with mental health issues through a qualitative analysis of their own statements. Aim. The following text is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject matter. The objective of the present study was to utilise established theoretical frameworks to elucidate the perceptions of children with mental health issues regarding the factors that are deemed essential to their recovery, stability, and day-to-day functioning. Materials and methods. The research utilised qualitative grounded theory methods (Strauss & Corbin, 1998). The analysis was based on 33 semi-structured interviews with children and adolescents aged 13–18 who have personal experience with mental health issues and contact with the care system (e.g., psychologist, helpline, social services). The analysis was conducted in three phases (open, axial, and selective coding), with the need for a safe, trusting relationship emerging as the central category. Results. The informants described six fundamental categories of needs: (1) the need for safety and acceptance, (2) a trusting relationship, (3) access to information, (4) support at school, (5) understanding within the family, and (6) meaning and identity. Children frequently reflect on the absence of a sensitive approach, stigmatization, and institutional failure, which lead to isolation, mistrust, and the risk of chronic problems. Conversely, the presence of stable, non-judgemental and accessible support was found to result in an improvement in the children's condition and the activation of their internal resources. Conclusions. It is imperative to acknowledge that children grappling with mental health issues require not only an augmentation of available services, but above all, the cultivation of reliable relationships and an environment that fosters their acceptance as whole individuals. The provision of care should be predicated on the principles of respect, continuity of relationships, and accessibility, with a view to overcoming the barriers that exist between institutions. The findings of the present study corroborate the significance of a multidisciplinary, sensitive, and participatory approach that incorporates the family, school, and community.
