Significance of English Language in the Emerging Interface of Science, Commerce and Humanity

English language has become a global language and, therefore, its importance in the present education system cannot be overlooked. The New/National Education Policy (NEP), an ambitious policy envisaged by the Govt. of India, has opened a new avenue to the students community in India. It provides a platform where students are free to gain knowledge of their choice. They can now opt for different subjects from various other disciplines. In this new system of education English is going to play a significant role in deliverance of education. Being a medium of instruction as well as an independent subject it will surely be needed for the interface of all the three disciplines: Science, Commerce and Humanities. We are living in an age of globalisation where all the world has been reduced to a small village. The concept of globalisation has given opportunity to English language to flourish in leaps and bounds. British colonialism proved to be a unifying force which brought a major chunk of the earth under its control and thus propagated English language and culture in their colonies. Historically, English was the official language of many countries during the colonial period. In the colonial period, the English people went to far-off countries in the world for trade and business and established colonies there. With the passage of time, they felt the need to get cheap men-force to get their business delivered hassle-free. This approach in turn, gave a boost to spread their language at a fast pace. Moreover, the people of the subject-countries found a sense of pride in learning English language as the language belonged to their masters. It gradually became their intellectual language. Wherever the britishers went in the world, they spread their language and in this way a large part of the world came in contact with English language. The spread of English language provided a platform to people across the world to come nearer and share their experiences and knowledge. Thus, English language rose to be a global language in a very short span of time. It has now become the need of every country and individual to learn English in order to make progress in trade and business.
