The article identifies global trends in the development of the energy sector that affect modern interstate cooperation between Russia and Iraq. Through political analysis, the article interprets the dominant factors that either facilitate or hinder the implementation of mutually beneficial energy projects between the two countries. It also assesses the risks and threats to cooperation at the institutional and non-institutional levels caused by the sanction policies of unfriendly states. The focus is on ensuring the energy security of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Iraq in the context of the formation of a multipolar world and their efforts to uphold national and state interests. The article employs scientific tools of political comparative studies, forecasting, and interpretation of empirical, including statistical, data. Conclusion dwells upon the fact that the cooperation between Russia and Iraq is a mutually beneficial interaction aimed at emphasizing the agency of both countries as regional and global players in the first third of the XXI century.
