This text is a review of Bruno Drwęski’s work on the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarność” “Solidarity”, in which the author seeks to define the organisation’s identity. The way Drwęski presents the notion of “self-governing Poland” should be perceived as largely misconceived, expressing rather anarcho-communist sentiments than relating to Polish reality following the August–September 1980 strikes. That does not mean, however, that making use of Karl Marx’s legacy to understand the Polish transformation in the period 1980–1990 would be completely pointless. Still, instead of referring to the concept of class struggle, it would have been more worthwhile to refer to the theory of the inception and fall of various socio-economic formations.
