Geographical Indication (GI) systems serve as crucial mechanisms within intellectual property, distinguishing products based on their unique qualities tied to specific geographic regions. Despite India's progress in registering 560 GI statuses, challenges persist, necessitating insights from global GI systems to refine and expand its framework. While the issuance of GI statuses has increased, attention must be directed towards maintaining and enhancing product quality post-recognition. Stringent quality control measures, adherence to standards, and continuous improvement are imperative to uphold authenticity and reputation in domestic and international markets. This research essay aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the Geographical Indication (GI) market while assessing the prevalent challenges. It underscores the significance of prioritizing quality assurance over quantity to enhance the value of Indian GI products. By analyzing various aspects of global GI systems, such as administrative efficiency, legal clarity, enforcement mechanisms, and international cooperation, this essay endeavors to identify effective strategies for strengthening India's GI regime and mitigating existing challenges.
