Significance South Africa generates around 80% of its electricity from coal and has suffered regular power shortages over recent years due to declining performance at its ageing coal-fired power stations. Despite this, adoption of renewable energy has been slow and mired in controversy. The government has not yet explained how challenges to the transition will be overcome. Impacts Rising electricity prices are encouraging non-payment of bills, which limits the ability of Eskom to boost output. New output from renewable energy will require significant additional investments in transmission infrastructure to distribute it. The move away from coal will bring the ANC into conflict with mining unions allied to the party.
