Aim Taking care of a child with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) may be linked with adverse effects in the parents' mental health. The causes of mental health problems associated with childcare are still not fully understood. This study aimed to assess the intensity of caregiver burden, depression and quality of life levels in mothers of children with CKD compared to a control group and to identify selected mental heath predictors. Material and Method Mothers of children diagnosed with chronic kidney disease who were followed up in Pediatric Nephrology outpatient clinics were included as the case group. Mothers with similar demographic characteristics were taken as the control group. The study data were obtained using the Sociodemographic Data Form prepared by the researchers, and the Zarit Burden Interview, the Beck Depression Inventory, and The World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref). Results Within the study period, 72 children with CKD and 78 control children were enrolled along with their mothers. The groups did differ signifcantly in terms of maternal psychopathology (p=0.024). The most common maternal psychopathology among mothers was Major Depressive Disorder. Carregiver burden and depression levels among mothers of children with CKD were significantly elevated compared to controls. Quality of life levels among mothers of children with CKD were significantly decreased compared to controls. Caregiver burden was found to predict quality of life in mothers of children with CKD (B= -0,539: pConclusions Psychological support should be provided to mothers of child with CKD. Addressing caregiver burden may be beneficial for quality life of mothers.
