Russian-Turkish relations in the last half of the XX – the first half of the XXI century. Circular relations model

The article develops the ideas of the publication “Relations between Russia and Turkey in the XIX – first half of the XX century. The peacefulness of conservatism and the conflictogenicity of liberalism” by R.R. Vakhitov. The purpose of this article is to test the hypothesis that during the periods of conservative modernization in Russia (USSR) and Turkey there was a desire for peace and cooperation between the countries, while conflicts occurred mainly during periods of liberalization and Westernization. The article examines the stage from the late 1930s (the death of Ataturk) to the present and concludes that the hypothesis is generally confirmed. The periods of authoritarianism and conservative modernization (the 1970s and the present) are marked by cooperation and rapprochement between the two countries, and the periods of liberalization (1950–1960 and the 1990s) – by conflict.
