Significance Both camps resisted working with the Commission on Presidential Debates, the traditional organisers, but unexpectedly agreed last month to work directly with broadcasters. Holding the first debate in June is unprecedentedly early and will lessen any electoral impact if one or other candidate performs poorly. Impacts Breaking with recent practice, the debates will be in a studio with no audience and microphones muted when a candidate is not speaking. Both sides insisted the two debates be sufficiently far apart from each other and election day to allow time for recovery from any missteps. A single debate has been agreed for either July 23 or August 13 between Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump’s choice for vice president.
