Following a preface by Suhanya Raffel and Michael Snelling that summarizes the nature and legacy of Bawa's work, the volume starts with an essay that Bawa wrote for the 1986 book on his work by Brian Brace Taylor. 1 Bawa rarely wrote about or publicly discussed his thoughts, design approach, or projects, but in this essay, titled "Statement by the Architect, " he emphasizes the importance of understanding and experiencing the site and its surroundings to the generation of architectural ideas, as well as the importance of designing to enhance the sense of place.
