Amid growing problems with questionable content, two academic publishers are closing down several scientific journals. The publishing giant John Wiley & Sons disclosed that it has shuttered 19 titles, including the Journal of Nanomaterials . According to the Wall Street Journal , the publications were flooded with submissions of fake papers stemming from paper mills, which churn out subpar or fake studies and sell authorships and citations in exchange for a fee. Meanwhile, a chemistry journal that was launched a few months ago by Taylor & Francis has also ceased publication after online critics pointed out that its editor in chief and most of its editorial board members authored several papers flagged on PubPeer, a site where researchers discuss scientific publications.
