Significance Thousands of combatants and civilians have been killed, over 8 million people (around one-fifth of the population) have been displaced and 18 million face severe acute food insecurity, which could well evolve into a major famine. The country is now divided into rival zones of control, with no single party holding the capital, Khartoum. Impacts The economy will remain diminished and partly reoriented by SAF towards military purposes. Significant ongoing civilian casualties are inevitable, especially without international action to curtail arms flows to both sides. New localised population displacements will occur, but some civilians may also return to areas where fighting has subsided.
