Abstract Starting with the different methods of controlling hydraulic power this paper analyses the possibilities of saving energy. It turns out that the two fundamentally different types of displacement control avoid purposely induced throttle losses. New developments in this field are presented. But also valve controls when combined with displacement controls based on the LS-principle have a potential for significant reductions in throttle losses. The power saving potentials of different pump controls are compared quantitatively for a certain loadcycle.
