Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy and its main treatment consists of reducing the intraocular pressure. Alongside this therapy, over the years, other substances with direct neuroprotective action have been studied, identified on the basis of the new molecular targets implicated in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. This review illustrates the current evidence regarding the therapeutic targets of the various substances proposed and studied from an experimental and clinical point of view. The most recent evidences regarding new therapeutic approaches, as well as some aspects of alternative and behavioral medicine are also reported. The aim of this review is to be comprehensive but friendly and to transfer, as far as possible, the data provided by the research into current clinical practice.
