Abstract

Abstract Ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa Laws.) forms an ectomycorrhizal relationship with Pisolithus tinctorius when grown in nursery soil containing vegetative mycelia of this symbiont. The ectomycorrhizae persist for 2 years on seedlings planted on a prairie soil. Survival of ponderosa pine seedlings with P. tinctorius was 18 percent greater after two growing seasons than seedlings with mycorrhizae which developed in the nursery following soil fumigation. Although mycorrhizal treatment had no effect on seedling height or stem caliper after 2 years, a significant increase in plot volume index due to P. tinctorius was observed after the second growing season.
