The article examines the most significant achievements of modern Russian and foreign, including post-Soviet historiography on the problems of national-territorial demarcation of Central Asia and Kazakhstan in the mid-1920s. The peculiarities of the approaches of historians from different countries and the assessment of the causes, goals, process, outcomes and significance of the demarcation are determined. Some topical issues are highlighted that require study and reflection, taking into account the Soviet experience of federation building and comparison with other regions of the USSR, the contribution of the ethnopolitical elites of Central Asia and Kazakhstan to the construction of modern nations, and the nature of changes in the ethnosocial parameters of society.
