The project to provide a comprehensive online subject index to the wealth of material in The Indexer builds on previous work that identified shortcomings in the existing finding aids and surveyed user practices. This present article not only outlines how the indexing guidelines and a controlled vocabulary are being developed, but is also an example of international collaboration for an international journal. Steps in the process included writing a comprehensive indexing policy, setting out clear guidelines on what content should be indexed and how it should be indexed, and compiling a trial index. The three strands of the project proceeded concurrently, with each process feeding into the others, in an iterative fashion.
