In this paper, we aim to address some of the methodological and epistemological issues and questions that we encountered in the course of our research on the emergence of the Maoist political movement in Argentina during the 1960s. From formulating the problem to working with specific or related bibliography, we were challenged to approach this issue from the perspective of historical materialism, integrating aspects dialectically without becoming one-sided. By deconstructing the subject and the theoretical and methodological issues involved, we developed a proposal for an approach that would allow us to revisit texts and studies and rethink this type of analysis. Therefore, readers will not find a comprehensive study of Argentine Maoism here. Our appeal to it responds to the dual motive of providing examples and / or engaging in dialogue with aspects that we believe can be generalised, while also anchoring our reflections in historiographical practice itself. The focus will therefore be on raising and addressing problems and questions that emerge from the study of this phenomenon, and on tracing a path that intersects the research process with the formulation of questions that arise and go beyond the specific topic.
