The article examines the dynamics of the diplomatic conflict caused by the beginning of the January Uprising of 1863—1864. The positions of England, France and Austria in the process of a collective demarche against the actions of the Russian Empire in the Tsardom are analyzed. Russias position was examined taking into account journalistic sources. As a result of the study, a connection was established between the official position of Russia and domestic socio-political opinion. Based on the results, it is concluded that the attempt to internationalize the Polish question undertaken by England, which played the main role in the initiative of the demarche, which in fact ended in a diplomatic defeat (victory of the Russian Empire), essentially achieved its goals. Despite the pro-French position of Foreign Minister A. M. Gorchakov, England managed to worsen Franco-Russian relations.
