The NCCES brief required a programme of archaeological trial trenching to sample the site ahead of residential development. This was achieved by excavating two trenches measuring 25.00m x 1.80m. In agreement with NCCES, trench two was split into two, to avoid utilities services encountered running through the middle of the trench. A 360 mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket was used to machine down to the first archaeological horizon, thereafter all excavation work was undertaken by hand. The archaeology was recorded using pro-forma record sheets, drawn plans and section drawings and appropriate photographs were also be taken. On the 4th and 5th of November 2025, Britannia Archaeology Ltd (BA) undertook trial trenching as part of archaeological mitigatory works on behalf of MC Nurse. The archaeological work was required as a condition of planning application 24/01514/F ahead of the construction of residential development at The Beeches, 31 Chequers Rd Pott Row, Grimston Norfolk (TF 7041 2265). This was achieved by excavating two trenches measuring 25.00m x 1.80m, to sample the area threatened by development. The site had a high potential for features and finds relating to the Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods. The potential for features and finds from all other periods was moderate. Despite the above potential, only two features, a posthole and ditch, likely of post medieval date, were encountered. The positioning and depth of the posthole combined with its lack of material culture, suggests that this is a result of a more recent modern intrusion. However, earlier origins cannot be discarded. It is highly likely that the ditch corresponds with a boundary ditch present on the 1884 6" map and is therefore likely of post-medieval date. Overall, the evaluation was successful is characterising the archaeology at the site.
