Abstract The internet and social media have profoundly influenced adolescents’ affective and sexual behaviors. This study aims to discuss the impact of digital media on the construction of sexuality and on virtual affective relationships among adolescents, highlighting benefits, risks, and the importance of sexual education mediated by both digital and emotional literacy. It is a theoretical-reflective analysis based on a literature review and secondary data, particularly from the TIC Kids Online Brazil 2023 report and other scientific sources addressing adolescence, digital media, and sexuality. The focus emphasizes virtual interactions and their influence on young people’s emotions and relational bonds. Findings indicate that 93% of Brazilian adolescents aged 9 to 17 access the internet daily, and 80% use social media. Approximately 26% reported feelings of sadness or anxiety after online experiences. Virtual affective relationships are increasingly common, yet often characterized by volatility and significant emotional impact. While digital communication facilitates bonding, it can also generate insecurity, frustration, and distress, particularly among adolescents in the process of identity formation. Digital media constitutes a powerful instrument in the experience of sexuality. Without critical mediation, however, it may expose young people to emotional and behavioral risks. Therefore, sexuality education should include the conscious use of the internet, integrating digital literacy—the ability to use technologies critically, safely, and ethically. This entails developing communication skills, self-awareness, and socioemotional competencies. Educational strategies grounded in respect, empathy, and dialogue are essential to deconstruct myths, prevent risky behaviors, and strengthen healthy bonds, both in virtual and real environments.
