The “thermostat as observer” has become a popular motif in discussions of mind, information, and minimal forms of observation. In this framing, a thermostat is often treated as a rudimentary observer: a system that monitors its environment, encodes information in a small internal state space, and acts on that basis. In this paper, we argue that this framing conflates two fundamentally different things: systems and observation events. A thermostat is not an observer in itself; rather, observation resides in discrete imprint events at an interface between the thermostat and its environment. We propose an alternative description of the room–thermostat setup in terms of context fields (for the room and the thermostat), an interface (the time-dependent state in which their interaction becomes visible and causally effective), and imprint or observation events: discrete moments at which the joint configuration of both fields is imprinted on the interface and changes the subsequent context. In this view, each switching event (turning the heating on or off when a critical temperature is reached) is an observation event, while the thermostat hardware is part of one context field, not an observer. This reframing leaves all underlying physics unchanged, but shifts the question from “Is a thermostat an observer?” to “Where and how do observation events arise in a given system?” We suggest that this shift avoids unnecessary metaphysical inflation of the term “observer” and provides a cleaner starting point for analysing observation across classical and quantum domains—without making any claims about consciousness.
