This article considers the modified Mercator projection according to G. Pápay’s proposal. It is shown that this projection is not conformal outside of the interval for φ ∈ −π/4,π/4. Although Pápay named them so, the straight lines drawn by Pápay on the map of this projection are not images of loxodromes. The article gives formulas of the modified Mercator projection based on Pápay‘s description. Having derived the local linear scale factors along the meridians and parallels, it was possible to conclude that the projection is not conformal and to draw a map in that projection showing the contours of the continents, and the image of the loxodromes. Here it can be seen that part of a loxodrome is a straight line – this is only in the interval φ ∈ −π/4,π/4, and outside it is a curve that approaches the poles, but never reaches them, as was expected.
