• The FLASH sparing effect is an interplay between dose, dose rate and endpoint. • Changing one parameter changes the FLASH requirements of the other two parameters. • A simple schematic risk zone map gives an intuitive understanding of this interplay. The FLASH sparing effect is an interplay between dose, dose rate and endpoint. Changing one parameter changes the FLASH requirements of the other two parameters. A simple schematic risk zone map gives an intuitive understanding of this interplay. FLASH tissue sparing involves an interplay between dose, dose-rate and investigated endpoint. A risk zone map that divides the two-dimensional dose – dose-rate-space into different toxicity risk zones based on previous in-vivo data illustrates this interplay intuitively, including why FLASH sparing manifests at lower dose rates for severe compared to mild toxicity.
