Abstract The purpose of the study was to evaluate the translucency and water absorption of four resin composites with color-shifting properties (Omnichroma, Vitra APS Unique, Estelite Sigma Quick, Estelite Asteria), compared with contemporary universal resin composites (G-aenial anterior), as well as to investigate the relationship between water absorption and translucency. Despite the widespread clinical use of single-shade resin composites, limited knowledge exists regarding how water exposure affects their translucency and long-term esthetic stability, highlighting the necessity of this investigation. Five types of resin composites (Omnichroma, Asteria, Estelite Sigma Quick, Vitra Unique, and G-aenial anterior) were evaluated. Fifty specimens (10.0 mm × 1.0 mm) were prepared ( n = 5, per group) according to ISO 4049, with translucency and water absorption assessed after 24 h ( t 0) and following 1 week of water storage ( t 1). After immersion in water at 37 °C for 7 days, changes in weight and translucency were measured. Water absorption was calculated, and color differences were analyzed using the CIEDE2000 formula. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey’s test and Pearson correlation analysis ( a = 0.05). Translucency differences between initial and post-immersion measurements ranged from 1.101 to the greatest change in translucency, and Estelite Sigma Quick the least. Statistically significant differences in water absorption were noted among the resin composites, with Omnichroma showing the highest absorption ( p < 0.05). No significant correlation was found between translucency and water absorption ( R 2 = 0.00). Water immersion affected the translucency and color parameters of the tested resin composites, though no correlation was observed between translucency and water absorption.
