Abstract The article highlights the complex and accomplished career of Latvian architect Gunnar Birkerts (1925–2017). Born in Latvia, educated in architecture in Germany, and professionally active in the United States, Birkerts developed a body of work that distinguishes him within the global architectural canon. The culmination of his creative practice is the National Library of Latvia, a project that synthesizes his conceptual and formal ambitions. The article underscores the significance of the year 2025 , which marks both the centenary of Birkerts’s birth and the 500th anniversary of the first Latvian book printed in Germany in the context of the Reformation.
