To grow old is to encounter one of life’s deepest paradoxes. Aging brings the reminders of mortality: aching joints, waning energy, friends and spouses who fall ill or pass away. Yet it also offers an extraordinary opportunity to live with perspective, distill experience into wisdom, and consider what legacies we wish to leave behind. Longevity has become a hallmark of modernity, but added years don’t guarantee added meaning or dignity.
