A friend and colleague, Paul Elovitz, suggested that I consider writing a personal account about living with cancer without being defined by it. As I thought about his suggestion, the fact struck me that although there is more to my life than cancer, I very much do define myself by my illness. My sense of myself has become intertwined with my cancer and all that goes with it. I do not view this as a negative but as a reality.
