The atmospheric plasma polymerization of low-vapor-pressure and highly viscous bio-based isosorbide methacrylate is studied using a liquid-assisted atmospheric plasma polymerization approach. The effects of the discharge power, the monomer injection rate, and the plasmageneous gas on the polymerization efficiency of this highly viscous monomer are investigated using FTIR and microscopy techniques, further correlated with in-situ plasma characterization and mechanical peel testing. Results highlight notably that argon plasma promotes coatings that are durable, cohesive, and homogeneous, in direct contrast with nitrogen plasma which leads to less stable and inhomogeneous coatings with lower cohesion.
