Abstract Financial crises are not random. They are phase transitions, and phase transitions are predictable. This paper introduces the Entropic Chronoscope, a framework that establishes a formal isomorphism between the microstructural dynamics of financial markets and the Navier–Stokes equations of fluid dynamics. From this mapping emerges the Financial Reynolds Number (Ref), a dimensionless, continuously computable observable that diagnoses the thermodynamic state of a market in real time. We demonstrate that the boundary between orderly market flow and turbulent collapse is governed by a universal constant, the Pirolo Constant (Rec = 2, 149), derived from the topological reduction of the Hagen–Poiseuille pipe-flow transition via the Limit Order Book (LOB) depth factor. Through empirical validation against the S&P 500 index (2005–2026), the framework successfully detects every major systemic crisis—including the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the 2010 Flash Crash, and the 2020 COVID-19 crash—achieving a 100% turbulence classification rate during market collapses. Furthermore, we propose the Thermodynamic Circuit Breaker (TCB), a deterministic intervention mechanism designed to prevent liquidity evaporation. The algorithm operates entirely without control-flow branches in its critical loops, achieving sub-microsecond latency execution suitable for high-frequency trading (HFT) environments and regulatory monitoring infrastructure.
