The increasing reliance on digital data has highlighted several limitations of centralized file storage systems, including single points of failure, lack of user control, and privacy concerns. To address these issues, decentralized file storage systems have gained significant attention in recent years. Such systems distribute data across peer-to-peer networks and often integrate cryptographic techniques and blockchain technology to ensure data integrity, availability, and security. This paper presents a literature survey on decentralized file storage systems, focusing on peer-to-peer architectures, content-addressed storage, and blockchain- based storage solutions. Existing research works are analyzed to understand their design approaches, security mechanisms, and performance characteristics. The survey also identifies key challenges and research gaps related to scalability, latency, privacy, and real-world adoption. The objective of this study is to provide a structured overview of current developments and highlight future research directions in decentralized file storage systems.
