The history of the study of the family Ephippioceratidae Miller et Youngquist, 1949 is discussed. The family includes three genera: Ephippioceras Hyatt, Megaglossoceras Miller, Dunbar et Condra and the monotypic genus Arthuroceras Shimansky. The morphology and distribution of all species of these genera are analyzed. The species composition, stratigraphic and geographic distribution of the genera Ephippioceras and Megaglossoceras are updated. Criteria for separating these genera are proposed. The dispersal of the family Ephippioceratidae is discussed. Its evolutionary history in the Carboniferous is reconstructed, starting in the Eastern Hemisphere, but taking place mainly in the Western Hemisphere, and then ending again in the Eastern Hemisphere.
