This study assesses the sustainability efficiency of 14 European rail operators (2011–2019) using a slack-based model with undesirable outputs. Results show moderate but decreasing inefficiency (23–28%), with climate protection and emissions as key weaknesses. Energy efficiency needs less improvement.
