Public transport is a crucial point in the development of sustainable traveling and commuting. Countries and cities all around the world are aiming at developing their public transit offer and making it as efficient as possible. The functionality of bus terminals is central to this efficiency: in some bus networks, a large proportion of all journeys pass through a terminal, which often provides the link between regional and local public transport. However, many terminals have capacity issues, such as Linköping Resecentrum, Brommaplan (Stockholm) and Sollentuna. This study investigates methods for detecting and analyzing congestion in bus terminals using Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) positioning data.
