Environmental Justice Movements in Tanzanian Resource-Rich Communities: A Qualitative Exploration

Environmental justice movements are increasingly recognised as crucial in addressing environmental inequalities across resource-rich communities worldwide. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with local activists, community leaders, and government officials. Data collection was conducted through participant observation in key events and workshops. Findings indicate that environmental justice movements in these communities are predominantly led by women and youth, forming coalitions to advocate for sustainable development and equitable resource management policies. The study underscores the importance of inclusive participation and community-led initiatives in shaping effective environmental governance strategies. Policy makers should prioritise community-based approaches and support mechanisms that enable marginalized groups to participate actively in decision-making processes related to natural resources.
