Compassion has become a fundamental aspect of UK healthcare policy, emphasising its importance in the delivery of person-centred care. Compassionate care is consistently associated with improved patient experience. Patients who feel they are being treated with compassion frequently report lower levels of anxiety, stress and emotional distress. Compassion is particularly significant in mental healthcare, where its integration ensures care is more patient-centred and better suited to addressing patients’ emotional and psychological needs. This article explores the role of compassion in mental health nursing. Drawing on evolutionary theory, it explains how mental health nurses can enhance their understanding of compassion to support patients on their recovery journey. The article also underscores the importance of self-care and organisational support for sustaining a workforce capable of delivering compassion-based care.
